Ojai Film Festival Exhibits Courage in Screening Film Despite Legal Threats
The Big Fix, a documentary film about the BP oil spill by filmmakers Josh and Rebecca Tickell, will screen at the Ojai Film Festival as a part of the Focus Earth presentation despite the threat of legal action against the non-profit festival. The Big Fix, an official selection of the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, is screening Saturday, Oct. 27th at 3 pm at Chaparral Auditorium as a part of the non-competition Focus Earth slate of films.
This documentary exposes the corruption that allowed BP to get away with the worst oil disaster in the history of the US. To quote journalist Chris Hedges, “If you continue to believe in the fiction of a democratic system, then you’re wasting your time.”
This Sunday, Earth Day, marks the 2 year anniversary of the sinking of BP’s Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico. I was co-editor of the documentary, The Big Fix, that investigates the oil spill and exposes the impact on the people and the Gulf.
In the film, we expose the oligarchy that has captured our Democracy and corrupted our governments. We show how that corruption led to the spill itself through lax regulation and how it allowed the spraying of millions of gallons of extremely toxic dispersant to hide the oil and protect the corporations, like BP. Two years later, news stories are coming out all over about the mutations and the collapse of the Gulf fisheries. The Big Fix asks and answers the question, how could this be allowed to happen?
The Big Fix is being distributed as a grass-roots, bottom up, crowd sourcing activist tool. It is screening in over forty locations across the country this Earth Day weekend and beyond. Anyone who would like to host a screening of this documentary can go to this link above and set one up. Non-profit organizations can host a screening and use the screening as a fundraiser by selling tickets. Individuals can host a screening and give tickets to non-profit organizations to sell.
If you are interested in hosting a screening, follow this link and get the details. You can also check to see if there is already a screening in your area.
The doc I edited about the BP oil spill and the capture of our democracy and corruption of our governments that made it possible is coming to Netflix. If you have a Netflix account with DVD delivery, not just streaming, you can save the film to your queue.
The Big Fix - The Documentary the Oligarchy Doesn’t Want You To See.
Another great review of The Big Fix, screening in select locations this Earth Day, April 22nd.
“But what makes The Big Fix so indelible is that it doesn’t stop with this story, or these people. It pursues the underlying causes behind the causes of the spill, digging deeper and deeper, until it has formed a picture of entire institutions in disarray. The fact is that the blame for Deepwater Horizon and all that’s come after falls on everyone to some extent. It isn’t just BP for cutting corners; it’s the EPA’s for failing to enforce safety standards. It’s the governments for failing to back up the EPA. It’s cutthroat capitalism greasing wheels in the name of profit. It’s all of us citizens, for sitting idly by while corporations stole our democracy from us. Everything is responsible for this disaster. The only way to truly fix it is to change the system.” -Dan Schindel on March 18, 2012 in Doc of the Day, Reviews
